First Annual “King Caesar’s Autumnfest” was a Great Success

By Alison Arnold

Winter 2007

On a bright, crisp October day, with Peter Savage and President Ken Johnston acting as hosts Gershom and Alden Weston (King Caesar’s sons) the King Caesar House and grounds were open to over 300 visitors of all ages as they enjoyed various fun-filled activities in our first “King Caesar’s Autumnfest”.

Chaired by Judy Hall, Jane Hinkley and Marta Johnston, this inaugural event included rides around Powder Point on a wagon pulled by the Hobby Knoll Farm Clydesdales and Draco the dragon on the front lawn waiting to have his picture taken with anyone who wanted one.  There were donut eating contests, apple bobbing and the popular pumpkin treasure hunt.

Children entered their work in an art contest, won by Andy Brovitz (Grade 5) with a yellow and black stenciled image of the King Caesar House and poetry contest, won by Charlotte Wahle (Grade 4) with a poem titled “Autumn in Duxbury.”  Many impressive entries were made to the pie contest, which was enjoyed thoroughly by our panel of expert judges.  A key lime pie made by Michelle Manware took the prize.  Finally, the scarecrow-making contest was won by Laura Flynn with a woven grapevine creation.

There were tables for art, face painting and caramel apple making.  Burke Leahey and Mark Collins manned the hot dog grill and volunteers from the National Honor Society and St. John’s High School group volunteered to help wherever needed.  Cynthia Weller and her son provided entertainment along with the Civil War re-enactors led by our very own Patrick Browne.

Our thanks go to all the generous donors who underwrote the entire event especially Shawn Dahlen who donated the Trolley from the parking lot at the school and all the members who took time to volunteer on this fun day.  It was so popular that we have decided to make this an annual event.  So mark your Calendar for Sunday, October 14, 2007.#
