Historical Tour of Mayflower Cemetery Fall 2005 On October 29, 2005 at 4 p.m., the Duxbury Rural and Historical Society will present a tour of the oldest section of Mayflower Cemetery on Tremont Street. Participants will be guided through the beautiful and historic cemetery and told of some of Duxbury’s prominent citizens of the late 18th and 19th who are buried there. In the spirit of the Halloween season, the tour will also include a few Duxbury legends. In use by the early 1780s, Mayflower Cemetery replaced Duxbury’s first Burying Ground located on present-day Chestnut Street. In 1784, the town began construction of its Third Meeting House adjacent to Mayflower Cemetery. The Third Meeting House stood until 1840 when it was replaced by the present building of the First Parish Church. The oldest part of Mayflower Cemetery near the church contains many interesting gravestones commemorating Duxbury residents who shaped local history. The tour is open to the general public. Parking is available behind the First Parish Church and the Town Offices. Participants should meet in front of the First Parish Church. Tickets may be purchased before the tour ($5 adults, children free). Proceeds will support future educational programs of the Duxbury Rural and Historical Society.
