Christmas at the King Caesar House 2006

The Duxbury Rural and Historical Society is pleased to announce the theme of this year’s Christmas festivities at the King Caesar House.  On December 9 and 10, 2006 the public is invited to “A Storybook Christmas.” Each year, teams of local decorators fill the stately rooms of this mansion with vignettes of holiday cheer.  This year, the décor of each room will be inspired different holiday tales, some old and some new.

The Duxbury Rural and Historical Society’s annual Holiday Boutique will be open during the Society’s “Christmas at the King Caesar House” event from December 8-10.  New this year, following the King Caesar House event, the boutique will “travel” over to the Society’s headquarters at the Nathaniel Winsor, Jr. House, 479 Washington Street.  The Boutique will be open at 479 Washington Street from December 11-December 22, weekdays 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and weekends 1 to 4 p.m.

Chaired by Robin Nudd, the gift shop will feature items such as Robali Bags, Nantucket baskets by Pam Smith, pottery from On the Cusp Gallery, clothing from Fleece on Earth, jewelry from Gina Angel, soaps and lotions from West Elm Farm, Nut’n But Brittle, items from Sea Grape Studio, Lizzie’s Home Made Fudge, and gifts from Chameleon Interiors.  Over a dozen other vendors have also consigned their goods for sale at the gift shop.  The newest project of the Society’s Publications Committee, the full-scale color reprints of the 1903 Duxbury Village Map, will first be made available at the Christmas event.

Also new this year, good old St. Nick will arrive at the King Caesar House to regale visitors with some tales of his history and, if he has enough time during this busy season, may even read “Twas the Night Before Christmas,” by Clement Moore.  It is hoped that any children interested in hearing a story from Santa will attend.

Santa has decided to arrive wearing some of his older clothing, a suit he has not worn since the 1860s.  Visitors may find the garb to be a bit more patriotic in appearance than they are accustomed to.  There is a famous picture from Harper’s Weekly in 1863 of Santa wearing this particular coat with the troops during the Civil War.  The Society has been informed by Santa that this was one of his favorite outfits and that he would like people to see how he dressed at that time.

The “Story Hour with Santa” will run from 11 a.m. to Noon at the King Caesar House, 120 King Caesar Road, and is open to the general public.  Parents are asked to remain with their children during the story hour.  Refreshments will be served after the story.  Tickets are $5 per child (adults free).

The general public may tour the house on Saturday, December 9, from Noon until 6 p.m. and on Sunday, December 10, from Noon until 4 p.m.  Tickets are $7 for members, $10 for non-members, $5 for students/seniors and children under 6 are admitted free.
