Drew Archival Library Campaign Nearing its Goal

Winter 2007

The Town of Duxbury has nearly completed the restoration of the Wright Building.  This spring, the original 1909 wing will be leased to the Duxbury Rural and Historical Society to house our new “Drew Archival Library.”  In this beautiful new facility, the Society will preserve its unique collection of historic documents and make them available to the public.

The interior of the 1909 building has been brought back to its original appearance thanks to the Town’s magnificent restoration effort.  The rotunda dome is a breathtaking sight with its new, historically-correct paint colors.  Oak floors have been restored, original lighting fixtures reproduced from photographic evidence, and the black cypress mantle has been stripped of years of white paint and refinished with dark stain and gold leaf.

The Society has much work ahead in the next few months.  As soon as the space is prepared, the Society will commence loading in new furnishings, equipment, and, of course, the collection itself.  Based on the recommendations of an Interior Committee (consisting of Bob Hale (chair), Marta Johnston, Jean Kennett and Terry Vose) custom furnishings have been commissioned that are either reminiscent of or, in some cases, exactly reproduce the original furnishings of the 1909 library.  It will be a handsome facility.

To make all this possible, the Society set out to do two things.  First, the former home of the archives, the Drew House, has been placed on the market with the blessing of descendants of the Drew family.  The sale of the house will generate the majority of the endowment needed to support the Drew Archival Library in perpetuity.  Second, the Society has sought to raise $600,000 to round out the Drew Archival Library endowment fund and to generate the funds needed for furnishings and equipment.

We are very pleased to say that, to date, the Society has raised more than $515,000 or 85% of our goal.  Many generous members have made this possible and we thank you for your support.  We would especially like to thank the Hoyt Family, who have generously stepped forward to name the Reading Room; Frances K. Fogg, who has continued her long-standing preservation efforts on behalf of the Society by naming the Archives Room; and Lon and Mary Israel who have named the Conservation Room in memory of Pauline Winsor.

We have come a long way.  Now, to seek the final 15% needed towards our goal, a committee co-chaired by Audrey Macdonald and Jessica Tyler are seeking support from the membership at large.  If you have not yet heard from them, you will soon be receiving a packet of information about the Drew Archival Library project.  We are very close to our goal, and hope, if you have not already made a pledge, that you will consider a gift to help us “cross the finish line.”#
