Fall 2006

Successful Summer for Time-Travelers

By Alison Arnold

Over 65 children joined us as Time Travelers this summer on the grounds of the King Caesar House.  The workshops were held on Friday afternoons, each one dealing with a different aspect of life as a child in the federal period.

The children learned about ropes and knots, calligraphy and cross stitch, making butter and the importance of an herb garden.  There was a history scavenger hunt during which teams of four were given pictures of items around the King Caesar House and grounds and tasked with locating the items and figuring out their purpose.  Our final workshop had Fred Depaul of Vermont as our guest with his sheep.  Our Travelers had the distinction of naming the 1 month old baby sheep that came with his mother.  His name is now “Sherman.”  Mr. Depaul demonstrated the art of sheep shearing with old-fashioned hand cranked shears with every child having the opportunity of turning the crank.  After the wool was the gathered, they were taught about carding and spinning wool and then taught how to finger knit and knit with needles.

The Education Committee would like to thank Lynne Wolfe, Janet Ritch, Sonia Kelly, Toni Orosz, Andrea Doherty, Kelly Browne and Pat Sointu for generously donating their time as volunteers and helping make this summer’s Time Travelers workshop a huge success.
