Winsor Descendants Share Family History

On August 18, the Duxbury Rural and Historical Society celebrated the bicentennial of the construction of the Nathaniel Winsor, Jr. House.  A crowd of approximately 100 enjoyed the reception and viewed an exhibit on the history of the Winsor family and the house.

Descendants of Nathaniel Winsor, Jr. from Ontario, Canada (Mr. and Mrs. Winsor Pepall) made the event very special by bringing, for exhibit exclusively that night, the only known painting of Nathaniel.  The portrait was probably removed from the house when Nathaniel sold the property in 1831.  Therefore, when it returned in August, it had likely not crossed the threshold in 176 years.

Just a few weeks prior to the event, the Pepall family visited the DRHS and made a generous donation of a portrait of a grandchild of Nathaniel, Georgiana Winsor.  They also brought a binder full of Winsor family history and images that has been added to our collection at the Drew Archival Library.  Finally, they had a full size photographic copy made of the portrait of Nathaniel which will soon be on display at the Society’s headquarters in the Nathaniel Winsor, Jr. House.

We are most grateful to the Pepall family for sharing their family’s history.
