Update on the Wright Building

Over the course of the fall the Society, through President David Jenkins, Trustee Lee M. Kennedy (chair of the Society’s Wright Building Committee) and Director Patrick Browne, has kept in communication with various Town committees with regard to our proposed use of the Wright Building for an archival facility.  In exploring this concept, we have received great support from the Board of Selectmen, the Community Preservation Committee and others.

As many readers are probably aware, the Special Town Meeting in June 2004 voted to proceed with plans and specifications for renovations to the Wright Building.  The Society, at the suggestion of the Selectmen, has been in contact with the architectural firm that is developing the plans—Feingold, Alexander & Associates.  They have a solid understanding of our space needs and intended use.

Our stated space needs are based on a July 2002 study called “Improving Stewardship for Library and Archival Materials at the DRHS” conducted by an archival consultants Inlook Group.  Although Inlook Group proposed the construction of a new facility, we have found that their recommendations fit well within the old portion of the Wright Building.  Coincidentally, the amount of space recommended by the study almost exactly matches the square footage of the old portion of the Wright Building.

Our archives contain documents that are centuries old.  They are crucial to our community’s heritage and deserving of a dedicated and safe archival facility.  We look forward to the completion of the architectural plans and to further discussion with the Selectmen.###
